Frequently Asked Questions About Micro-needling

Everyone aims to look their best, and a number of new procedures help people achieve their goals. However, when it comes to medical esthetics, there are a ton of questions clients have but often find answers challenging to come by. Tropicalaser, wants to arm you with the most accurate information available and to do this, we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions about micro-needling.

1. What kind of skin conditions can be treated with micro-needling?
We can treat fine lines and wrinkles, large (open) pores, stretch marks, acne scarring, and uneven skin tone.

2. How does micro-needling work?
We use a needle module containing six tiny microneedles manufactured in an eleven stage process from surgical steel. This needle module is driven by a small electrical motor which allows us to deliver tiny pinpricks to the skin at depths ranging from 0.1 mm to 1.5 mm, depending on the area being treated and the response of the individual being treated. Our clinical endpoint is pinprick bleeding or mild erythema (redness of the skin). These pinpricks deliver micro wounds to the skin which set up an orderly cascade of healing which repairs the skin from within. Among other things, the treatment generates new collagen and elastin to firm the skin.

3. What are the contra-indications to micro-needling?
There are only a few contra-indications:
a. Microneedling should be used with extreme caution on very dark skin.
b. People using blood thinners should not opt for micro-needling treatment.
c. Clients on Accutane cannot undergo this treatment – and for three months after discontinuing use thereof.
d. Microneedling should not be done if the client has had a recent chemical peel, microdermabrasion, laser, botox or filler, or RF treatment.
For a complete list of pre-treatment guidelines, please call Tropicalaser.

4. How many treatments will I require?
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to predict how many treatments will be required. The number depends on the severity of the underlying condition, the age of the person being treated, the general state of their skin, and individual response. However, the rule of thumb is three to six treatments.

5. How much downtime is there with micro-needling?
Usually, there is minimal downtime with micro-needling. We recommend that people avoid treatment of their faces within a couple of days of a major event, but usually, any sign of redness can be covered up by make-up within twenty-four hours. Older and fairer skinned clients may require a day or two. Those clients who do not wear make-up (male clients in particular), should plan for three days of downtime.

6. When can I start using my usual skin care products and make-up?
We will send you home with a post-treatment kit which you should use exclusively for three days. Make-up can be applied twenty-four hours after treatment.

7. Is micro-needling painful?
Most people tolerate micro-needling very well. Areas that are more painful are the forehead, upper lip, and eyelid. We routinely numb our facial micro-needling clients to reduce pain to a minimum.

8. Are all micro-needling devices the same?
No! There are only three micro-needling devices which have been Health Canada approved as of the time of writing. The Dermastamp Dermaroller used by Tropicalaser was the first such device to be accepted. The needles used have a pointed – not blade shaped – profile. A blade shaped microneedle can inflict harm on the skin. So, please exercise caution when selecting a micro-needling provider.
