Studies have shown that self confidence increases when a person is happy with their appearance. There are a number of reasons why a person might not be pleased with what they see in the mirror, but thankfully micropigmentation can help. While many people know micropigmentation is used for permanent make up procedures, less is known about its other applications. Read on to learn just a few of the ways micropigmentation can help boost people’s self confidence.

Areola pigmentation is the process by which pigment is implanted into the skin surrounding the nipple. This technique can be used to “create” an areola after breast reconstruction, minimize the appearance of scars or restore an areola to a more natural looking colour and shape. Whether you have lost your breasts to a mastectomy, or are experiencing areola and nipple discolouration due to breastfeeding, areola pigmentation can give you back your confidence and boost your self esteem.

Vitiligo is a skin condition characterized by patches of skin losing their pigment. Micropigmentation can help sufferers of Vitiligo by implanting pigment under the skin to soften harsh edges and match skin tone. If your vitiligo is in remission, you are a good candidate for micropigmentation.

Micropigmentation can also be used to cover up scar tissue. Loss of skin color is extremely common with scars, and it can leave people feeling self conscious about their body. By using micropigmentation, flesh tone pigment can be implanted into the skin, thereby disguising a scar.

Only certain types of scars are able to receive micropigmentation. In order to be a candidate for micropigmentation, your scar must be:

  • Completely healed (9 – 12 months old), and no longer changing colour
  • Smooth and relatively flat
  • Without dark edges

Lastly, micropigmentation can be used to create the illusion of hair for people who are suffering from hair thinning, hair loss or scarring on the scalp. Scalp micropigmentation works by drawing tiny particles of pigment on the scalp that resemble short hairs. On men, this procedure produces the appearance of “stubble”, with a visible hairline. On women, scalp micropigmentation creates an underlayer, which gives the illusion of a full head of hair.
